Halloween is one of the celebrated holidays in the world. From trick or treating to costume parties, it is simply one of the events in the world where you can show your evil side. Celebrated on October 31st, which is a day after all saints day, it has been introduced in America in the late 19th century and became a pop culture up to this day.
The basic symbols used on Halloween are carved pumpkins, which are typically placed on the porch during the event. Jack-o'-lanterns are traced back to the legend of Stingy Jack where most pumpkins are often carved with silly or scary faces.
From then on, there are games and things done on this event are bobbing for apples in which they float on a tub which originally done in Ireland. There are also forms of divination called Puicini, and of course the most popular is the telling of ghost stories, visiting haunted attractions like haunted house and watching horror films are the most regular things that were done.
With trick or treating, the familiar foods that were given to children were candy apples or caramel apples are because Halloween comes in the wake of the annual apple harvest. There are also foods that associate to this holiday such as candy corn, novelty Halloween-themed candies, gum and chocolates.
The term Halloween is simply a shortened term for "All hallows day" which is also known as "All Saints Day". The Pope Gregory III and IV moved the Saint's day from May to November 1 which was on the 9th century. There are other perspectives that have been observed during this event, in Ireland, they celebrate Halloween far more traditional compared to America.
The first notable celebration of this event if from Ireland which dated back to 835 A.D... It was originally called "fire festival" which is the end of summer where the dead are thought to revisit the mortal world. Halloween is also celebrated in other parts of the world but not of the same name, Chinese tradition holidays have Ghost festivals instead.
Originally, the ancient Celts are the ones that observed this holiday. It was referred to as Samhain, which means sow-in. This was the day in which they believe that it is near the date associated with death and October 31st was the time where the boundary of the living and the dead are blurred and that the dead were reachable through their burial mounds.
